Far too many people have become captivated about “The Chosen.” Doesn’t God say we are to be discerning, test the spirits, and not follow the masses?

Discernment is sorely lacking today, especially in the Christian church. There is much New Age ideas in our society and they all speak of “love” and “unity.” Those words are tied in with ecumenicalism and it is what “The Chosen” promotes. Many are blinded to the ecumenical movement today and “The Chosen” is having a part in that movement. This is part of the apostasy that is prevalent in the churches today and it is growing day by day.

Unfortunately, some have begun to think “The Chosen” would be a good way to show how Jesus really is to those who have been in the Armstrong offshoots and were never taught about Jesus’ love or His true character. But those who have been in these groups will remember that Jesus was never emphasized that much. What was emphasized was God: “God’s Law,” “God’s Kingdom,” and “God’s government.” Furthermore, movies are not real life.

I recently watched the video The Chosen Exposen – The Full Documentary. I cannot even begin to do justice to tell how outstanding this production is. All the information in it has been thoroughly researched and not taken out of context. The video was disturbing and even sickening in parts with a lot of worldliness and sin exposed at times. The ending, however, was particularly good. I recommend watching it over several days, instead of skipping through it. Write down where you left off and then pick up at that place the next day. It is that important. Yes, it takes a long time, but it is the best way to educate ourselves, unless we want to read many articles and watch shorter videos, which can still be helpful but will not be as much in depth as this one is.

Therefore, how can exiters of the HWA offshoots, who never knew the true Jesus, be helped by watching a feel-good movie about a false Jesus, along with characters portrayed differently than revealed in the gospels? Jesus will clearly be shown to us in the Scriptures if we trust the Holy Spirit to reveal Him to us. What exiters need is a clear understanding of grace, which is something never taught them. We are saved by God’s grace, not by His love. Reading various articles on grace and books about Jesus (such as An Everlasting Love – A Devotional Study of the Gospel of John by John G. Mitchell) can be very helpful as they allow more time to ponder the words.

The producers of “The Chosen” say their goal is to reach a “billion” people with this series. They have so far brought in millions of dollars. In addition, they are selling all manner of products online and most of them aren’t cheap. The sites for purchasing such items used to be referred to as “the chosen merch” (for merchants) but later the name was changed to “the chosen gifts.” Isn’t a gift supposed to be free?

Many have been heard saying, “Well, it isn’t perfect, but millions are coming to Christ as a result of watching it.” How can we know if “millions” are truly coming to Christ when we have no idea how sincere or genuine most of these people will end up being, and especially what will be the fruits in their lives over time? We must be very careful about going by “an experience” and getting on the bandwagon.

Those who say people are “encountering Jesus” by watching “The Chosen” are encountering a false Jesus, a different Jesus. It is not the authentic Jesus of the N. T.  How much of the true gospel–the death, burial and resurrection of Christ ( I Corinthians 15:1-4)–is explained in this series of “stories about Jesus’ life”? A series that touts itself as being about the “life of Christ” and “making Scripture come alive” when one can’t see the difference between what is actually in the Scriptures and what the movie is displaying.

“The Chosen” focuses on the humanity of Jesus and not His divinity. His divinity is what we need, that part of Him which bore all our sins and forgave all of them. No movie could ever accurately portray the Divinity of Jesus who was very God in the flesh. (John 1:1) The article The Chosen: Is It Biblical? says,”Only the Bible is the inspired Word of God and it needs no enhancing or modern re-telling by fallible men.”

“The Chosen” is pulling people away from the real Jesus and the tragedy is that Dallas Jenkins is definitely changing Scripture and adding to it, in spite of saying he isn’t. (Proverbs 30:5-6)

Another objection is that there is a lot of Mormon (LDS) influence and involvement in “The Chosen.” The executive producers of “The Chosen,” Derral Eves and Brad Pelo, are Mormons. Doesn’t Scripture tell us not to have fellowship with unbelievers? (2 Corinthians 6:14-16) Dallas Jenkins has said (of the LDS), “We love the same Jesus.” The Mormon Jesus is not the same Jesus as the Jesus in the Bible. What’s more, Mormonism has ties to freemasonry and the occult. We should not let our emotions be manipulated by a “religious” movie, or be swayed by the smooth words of those who had a part in creating, writing, producing, or acting in it.

As brought out at the end of the video “Exposen the Chosen”, it says, “The authentic Jesus could never be in partnership with Mormonism; with things that are contrary to Scripture. … What is the Jesus they think they are encountering if it is not the true Jesus? A Jesus that everybody can accept. that is ecumenicalism. Jesus challenged people. It’s a different Jesus being presented in ‘The Chosen.’ … People are being touched by the drama but what they need is being touched by the Holy Spirit. … This show is a substitute for the real thing. What we are seeing is the beginning of the falling away; pulling people away from a Jesus that is not the real Jesus.”

Seek and ask for discernment and wisdom from God, search out the facts. Be aware of what is going on in our world today, lest you be deceived.
